Hyaluronic acid also known as hyaluronan is a sugar molecule that is naturally present in the human body. It helps hold water which keeps the skin fresh and hydrated.

The main benefits of hyaluronic acid are:

  • Hyaluronic acid keeps the skin hydrated and moisturized.
  • It helps prevent the development of wrinkles and fine lines thus being anti-aging.
  • It helps promote wound healing and tissue repair.

Hyaluronic acid keeps the skin hydrated and moisturized.

Hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold 1,000 times its weight in water.

This is massive.

Because of this, it is incredibly moisturizing and hydrating which helps keep the skin and collagen healthy and hydrated.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body and it accounts for up to 80% of our skin. Hyaluronic acid is attached to collagen on one side while the other side is linked with water molecules. This helps keep the skin looking fresh and not dull.

As we naturally age, collagen production goes down. The skin starts producing less and less healthy collagen which then leads to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Harsh weather, too much sun, and dehydrated skin can accelerate this deterioration of the skin which causes premature aging.

Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant that attracts water to the skin and if applied regularly, then fine lines and wrinkles start to get filled in and skin becomes firm and strong.

It helps prevent the development of wrinkles and fine lines thus being anti-aging.

Hyaluronic acid is like a BIG gulp of water for your skin. The skin is the largest organ in the body that is composed of skin cells and tissue. The skin just like every organ requires water to stay moisturized, hydrated and protected.

As we age, the skin becomes thinner and more fragile. After age 20, the skin starts to produce 1% less collagen each year. For every decade that passes, collagen production goes down by 10%. This can have a huge impact on the skin as collagen makes up around 80% of the skin.

That’s why it’s not surprising that elder people have wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin, reduced skin elasticity, etc.

There is a reason why it’s a must that people moisturize their skin after washing their face. Moisturizing helps keep the skin hydrated and healthy. Skin needs water to grow and survive just like every other thing in the body. By supplying moisture to your face via a moisturizer, skin doesn’t become dehydrated and dry out.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural humectant which helps attract water to the skin. This helps keep the skin hydrated and helps prevent the development of wrinkles and premature aging.

Any fine lines and/or wrinkles that are present on the face will gradually start to fade once hyaluronic acid is applied to the face regularly.

It helps promote wound healing and tissue repair.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the main components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). This is a structural network of macromolecules that supports the cells and tissues while regulating processes such as growth and communication.

Hyaluronic acid is found abundantly in skin and human tissues. It is able to regulate the migration of fibroblasts and keratinocytes and stores growth factors. Fibroblasts are cells that synthesize the ECM while also playing an essential role in wound healing. Because hyaluronic acid is able to mobilize and regulate these cells, it helps promote wound healing and tissue repair.

Hyaluronic acid helps decrease inflammation and encourages blood vessel formation at the damaged area. This helps ensure that the tissue and/or wound heal faster with minimal scarring.

Vaseline is super popular for treating cuts and/or wounds. It has been shown to keep wounds protected while healing them faster. Vaseline works like an occlusive. Occlusives form a physical barrier on top of the skin to prevent any water loss from the skin’s surface. By keeping the water trapped in the skin, this helps heal wounds and cuts faster.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant meaning that it extracts water from the air and pulls it into the skin’s surface. Both occlusives and humectants work to keep water in the skin which is known to help promote tissue growth and heal wounds.

Final Note

The craze with hyaluronic acid started in the form of serums. Serums pack concentrated forms of small size molecules of active ingredients that quickly and deeply absorb into the skin.

Hyaluronic acid is a macromolecule meaning that it is too large to be effectively absorbed into the skin’s surface. However it is still beneficial as it supplies the skin with this essential and natural molecule.
