I didn’t know life was a costume party when I decided to show up as myself.
And I was left wondering why I didn’t fit in.
Everywhere I looked people had personalities for each occasion.
Some of them wore theirs so well, you’d never be able to guess what’s actually underneath.
I never learned how to play the part. I answered questions honestly, laughed too loudly, admitted when I didn’t know something.
Very soon, I realised that honesty was a language not everyone spoke.
Masks can protect you during a storm, but wear one long enough and you tend to forget who you actually are.
If life indeed is a costume party, I’d rather come as myself than forget who I am entirely.
What are you wearing today?
Are you sure you’ll still recognise yourself when you look in the mirror?
