Over 30 years ago…

I should‘ve never survived the clutches of that snow-filled tomb, but clearly, I did, and I will always remember that moment. You know that one when your life flashes before your eyes — but by some miracle, you’re alive.

During a school ski trip to Fernie, BC, my guardian angel swooped down to the rescue, well — that’s one opinion.

I was 14 with an adventurous carefree spirit, fearlessly venturing up the summit lift with my best friend. Both of us experienced skiers but little did we know danger was imminent.

It had been a powder-perfect spring day of fun, but…

As we dismounted the T-bar, we were blasted by a wall of white — a severe freak blizzard would soon separate me from not just my friend, but from the world.

Instantly looking at each other, knowing we needed to get down and out of that mess as fast as possible. My friend took the lead; I followed a few feet behind. I could see her at first, but within maybe a minute, she vanished from sight.

It was the eeriest feeling, barely able to see a thing — an ominous whiteout and sensation swept over me, a trap was lurking, and I was…
