Prized Possessions
what a curious concept
it is
possession
“the state of having, owning,
or controlling something”
controlling something
“an item of property;
something belonging to one.”
something belonging
we buy insurance to protect
a thing
that unnerving sense of possible loss
sheltered
reimbursed monetarily
to only be replaced by
another thing
a possession
emotionally attached to what can
be replaced
will be, undoubtedly
eventually
a date with material
that belongs to me
I want to belong
so much so
that the hole that remains
deep, profound loneliness
lonely
masked through the purchase
of things
possessions
a sense of order
ordered control
the locus of self, returned
through this act of
thing
something
a bit of matter, shaped
formed into desire
scratches away
urge to purchase
to own
to make my one and only
prized possession
to fill that loneliness
with material companionship
with plastics and fabric
which
will end up inevitably in a landfill
but not before
I fill its special place
with another possession
