Ten perspectives on Technology to start good conversations
Have you ever wondered about some of the problems that technology alone can not solve? Four significant problems for today’s world are the pandemic, overpopulation, refugee problem and climate change. There’s a human dimension to these problems that technology by itself cannot solve.
While preparing for our recent mastermind session, I thought of sharing a few quick perspectives on technology here, that could be good conversation starters. So here goes.
#1
Technology is a great enabler. The pandemic has motivated us to use more Technology, and people who may have been reluctant earlier have now been forced to use more Technology to work, play, entertain themselves. This change has also accentuated inequality for those who still refuse to use Technology.
#2
One could say thanks to technology, the future is arriving much faster, including in the world of business. So, Technology is accelerating change and evolving by itself as well. However, economic growth still runs on the movement of goods, services, people, and money, where specialisation and Technology are enablers.
#3
Teamwork creates a competitive advantage in an organisation, much more than finance, strategy, or Technology. On the other hand, unlike in the past, today, businesses without lots of capital can also create massive value through the power of ideas and Technology. You don’t merely need capital to build capital. You can leverage technology. Start-ups are leveraging existing infrastructure and distribution channels to create soonicorns and unicorns. We need to support capitalists, who are more concerned with innovation in Technology more than pure investors, who are focused on achieving a quicker return on their investments.
#4
Digitisation helps in making Technology available to all demographics in a democratic manner. Students and job seekers in remote villages have access to the same information as in the cities. Technology dematerialises products and services and is disruptive. Think vinyl records, magnetic tapes, CDs, and USBs that we used to store our favourite songs.
#5
Technology is not only growing exponentially, but it is also converging. Think flying cars. Several technologies from the energy, automotive, aerospace and communication domains are converging to make flying cars a reality soon.
#6
The significant emerging technology trends, according to a BCG report include quantum computing, which can crack crypto and potentially make all resources available to everyone, synthetic biology to augment life and fusion to make us energy efficient.
#7
The paradox is that Technology will continue to improve productivity with software, robots, and bar codes but remove people from jobs. Alternate jobs are being created in different sectors, requiring retraining. A travel agent may need to retrain on drone-related gigs.
#8
Technology, in many cases, is useless or has a negative impact on the delivery of education. Did our kids improve their understanding only with video classes for their academic lessons?
#9
From the economic perspective, new growth in the global GDP will come from Technology. To benefit from this growth, we need to improve contract enforcement across borders and create a protocol for sharing Technology and standards.
#10
Perhaps we will feel better knowing the significant choices that power the artificial intelligence (AI) devices and solutions that impact us. Think of the biases of the software developers, who write programs, which then help machines to learn on their own (ML). Finally, in a society, our level of consciousness must be above the level of technology development, which helps keep the direction of Technology aligned to societal goals.
