Who decided December 17th was National School Shooting Day? This is not the first time a TikTok challenge has left schools in chaos. Throughout the course of the 2021–22 school year, students have taken to TikTok to encourage their peers to destroy school property, slap a teacher, and now, shoot up the school. Who even jokes about shooting up a school?

It is easy to blame TikTok itself for what has been happening at schools, but a social media app by itself does not tell students to cause chaos in schools. It is about what is being posted on this app that is destroying a school’s culture. These challenges are blatantly being used to break the rules that make schools safe, all for the sake of clout. Students want to look cool to their peers for rebelling against teachers and administrators with infractions that are blatantly wrong.

We already have students who think school is a joke as is, but now, it feels like students are spitting on everything teachers represent. We teach them the skill necessary for them to succeed in the 21st century, and they repay us by dismantling our property, slapping us, and threatening school shootings!
