What Would Your Future Self Advise You
Imagine from 10 years now, you live a completely different life or maybe the same as now. You tell me, what do you think that life would look like, or does it even matter?
Would you like to know what’s going to happen in the future step by step or you rather not think about it at all?
I wrote a letter to my present self from the eyes of myself in 2030. And after writing it I realized that I’m definitely one of those people who love not knowing what the future holds for me.
THE UNIQUE REPETITION
It’s ironic, isn’t it? To want to know what the future has in store for you, yet, still craving to be surprised by life. In other words, the dilemma of wanting to be in full control in order to feel safe versus the desire to feel the ultimate pleasure by not controlling it all. I believe it is a never-ending cycle in which we keep occasionally changing sides. But in 2030 I chose enjoyment rather than the illusion of safety.
Speaking for myself, the best thing about 2030 is to have witnessed how the strict nationalistic ideologies have crumbled away along with various other types of racism. More people are now aware of the fact that nationalistic ideas don’t act as glue between peoples.
Instead, they get mutated very easily and turn into vessels for hate which just create more harm, both mentally and physically in people everywhere. The majority of the general public demands reductions in rigid restrictions about immigrants and governments seem powerless facing this decisive crowd fighting for equality. If you would ask me what specific factor caused this movement, I couldn’t give you one. It has been a large chain of events in which every individual has contributed to their own actions. Perhaps, we have finally come to realize that everything this gorgeous planet offers is meant for all of us to experience freely. It is not only for some particular nationalities nor for any self-made privileged groups.
More people want to be in control of their freedom which is something I strongly relate to and mention in my column again and again. This longing for freedom is an unstoppable force that comes from the heart and pushes us to do creative, bold things. Office jobs are losing their popularity and if a company doesn’t have an entirely remote option for working it is considered old fashioned. In the meantime, there is a rising interest in building local businesses, especially in agriculture. What people wish is to reconnect with nature, they want to use their hands to create something truly meaningful. Living in skyscrapers, locking ourselves in tiny apartments in a sea of concrete is not what people are chasing after anymore. People seek to live for themselves and experience the creative power they have within, even if it is not the easiest thing.
Could it be said that the world has turned into a better place? Well, there are no wars or epidemics in 2030 and the ever-growing technology allows us to do fascinating things. But we do still get our hearts broken, feel worthless, hopeless sometimes, try to find our purpose in life without ceasing, bump into many challenges, and face the loss of our loved ones. We go to schools, build families, hope to find the love of our lives, lose our savings in investments, ask questions of God, and maybe hear from it or maybe not. We keep feeling and experiencing different things that have been felt and experienced countless times before us. Yet, life keeps exciting us, making us feel different and unique, and leaving us curious to experience more. 2030 is just a number. In fact, it is a product of the human mind which we have collectively agreed upon believing in and according to which we have designed our lives. It is not any different than the previous years yet still unprecedented.
Perhaps, you expected to hear more certain answers, like what you do for a living, or whether you’re single or married. But why would you want to get spoilers about the best movie you could ever watch? All you need to know is that life keeps being the biggest mystery in its own meandering way and the best thing to do is to merge with it. After all, the mystery is not there to be solved, but experienced.
So, what would you expect to hear from your future self?
