As writers, we have the freedom to open our laptops in our underwear, unfazed and ready to crank out a killer article. It’s nice, really, to have the option of working in our silky robes until 3 pm if we so please.

However (you knew there would be a however), while I am not the first to explain how dressing well translates to higher self-confidence, I am someone who has religiously been adorning myself in tailored jumpsuits, editor’s blazers, and shiny gold loafers before intense writing sessions & other editorial duties.

And I can tell you firsthand, it is a game-changer.

For writers looking to improve your craft on the daily, here is the logic behind Important Dressing

Countless studies have proven that what we wear directly impacts the way we think and feel about ourselves. The bottom line? Fashion has a huge influence on our wellbeing.

“The result in dressing sharp results in the following: Increased confidence + improved mood + improved mental health + more energy + boost in creativity + greater feelings of happiness + lesser feelings of stress and anxiety.”

When I dress in a way that makes me look important, I feel important. And when I feel important, I’m fearless in the way I write. I’m not afraid to pitch story ideas to big publications. I’m riskier in my sentence structure, and I all around feel like a professional.

I don’t second-guess myself before sending a piece to my editor, I just do it. I don’t hesitate before reaching out to someone I admire in the industry, whereas if I were sporting last night’s pajamas, I probably wouldn’t even think of contacting someone more successful and more experienced than myself.

A huge benefit from dressing up to write is that I am MUCH more choosy in the clients I take on. There’s nothing that kills your writer vibe more than working with an unsupportive or meh client.

Side note: Working with clients you love fares well for both your financials and your mental health.

So…if you’re looking to up your writer game in any way — creatively, strategically, whatever— I highly recommend dressing the part to get your mind right. Because when your mind is right, everything else follows suit.

Takeaways

  1. Know your worth as a writer, and don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re not worthy enough to be a Real Writer, especially yourself.
  2. Take time to understand what your version of success as a writer looks like. Not your friend’s or even your favorite writer or author’s — your version of professional success.
  3. Having fun with your personal style is a proven method of boosting mood, creativity, and brain function. Take advantage and experiment with your look! I promise it is NEVER a waste of time.
  4. Be consistent in your dressing well efforts. Make it part of your morning routine and don’t overthink it.
  5. You call the shots in your life. Dress accordingly.
