Checking out new Kohler kitchen accessories

Kohler, known for their yummy large bath products and kitchen sinks and faucets recently launched a line of much smaller items — kitchen accessories. I acquired a number of these items to give them a try in my own kitchen. The products are well made and stylish. The pieces have a clean contemporary look that would blend well in any style of kitchen. My own kitchen is grey and white, so the white color of the accessories is a perfect fit for me. A number of the pieces are also available in a charcoal color.

Kohler Soap Dispenser-s

About my favorite piece first — a soap dispenser. Not the world’s most exciting item, but for people who do a lot of cooking, as I do, it is an item you use a LOT. And what a difference a well-designed dispenser makes! The base is wide and stable, as is the top pump component, making it easy to pump out soap using one hand or the back of a hand while wrangling a large dirty skillet in the other hand. The entire top unscrews for easy refills. The dispenser price is $19.99.

I didn’t think I would like the piece called the “Surface Swipe”, but I was surprised. My style tends towards minimalism and if you have read some of my previous articles, you will know I am also not a fan of most specific

or single purpose gadget items. Straight out of the box, that’s what I deemed this to be. However, my husband immediately set about using this piece to scrape scraps out of our large flat bottomed sink and he converted me. The device’s flat scraper side is useful to clean out the sink and brush side helps with wiping food off when cleaning dishes. The Swipe has a handy little built-in ledge that keeps it attached to side of the sink — a feature that both helps it to drain after use and keeps it in it’s place but handy to reach. Retail price of the swipe is $13.30.

The paper towel holder (price $26.65) is simple — a looped metal ring inset into a plastic base. There are a couple of cool features to distinguish it however;

the base is solid and heavy making it easy to tear off paper towels with one hand and the “stepped” circle designs in the base keep the entire roll of paper towels from unrolling with every yank. This piece also comes in charcoal. Replacing a roll is easy also — just pull off the old one and pop on the new. My old paper towel holder had this huge ball that unscrewed off the top and even though that’s a little thing, it was inconvenient. I was happy to replace my old one with this new model!

Kohler Silicone Drying Mat-s

There are several other new products, including the heat-resistant, dishwasher-safe silicone drying mat (price $30.65) — this piece is definitely NOT single purpose. Great for drying hand washed pieces on a countertop, it is also handy to use as a “cushion” at the bottom of the sink when washing delicate pieces. The mat’s corrugated design makes it roll up for easy storage. There are brush and sponge caddies — all designed with the same clean, smooth lines and all having a good quality feel. The pieces are available on-line from the Kohler website; the site also has a store locator for retail purchase locations.
