Podcast Synopsis: Arnaud Bonzom from 500 Startups joined us for a conversation on the launch of his recent project, “Map of the Money” version 4 jointly with Florian Cormu. We discussed the ongoing trends in venture capital and fundraising across Southeast Asia from how seed stage funds have matured to series A and B funds now to the official list of “unicorns” in Southeast Asia. Last but not least, Arnaud offered some thoughts to how one should approach fundraising in Southeast Asia.

Here are the three interesting points which we discussed during this episode:

  • We offered an overview of the venture capital and startup scene in Southeast Asia for the past few years from 2010 to 2015.
  • A few major trends have emerged in Southeast Asia: (1) early seed stage funds such as Golden Gate Ventures and Jungle Ventures have graduated to series A funds; (2) the recent ignition of series B funds with one interesting example, B Capital led by Eduardo Saverin, former co-founder of Facebook; (3) the rise of corporate venture funds which started with SingTel Innov8 followed now by DBS, Capitaland, UOB and many others; (4) global venture firms such as Sequoia Capital and SoftBank ventures and corporations such as Alibaba have entered into the region with major acquisitions and (5) the emergence of unicorns such as Garena and Grab within the region.
  • We discussed how the entrepreneurs within Southeast Asia need to think about before going out for fundraising with their startups.
