There’s a lot of data available in the world but challenge lies in understanding & interpreting the data in an easily accessible format. Data driven insights are worthless if they cannot be conveyed to the stakeholders in an easiest possible way so that they can make their business decisions accordingly.

One such Data Visualization tool is Tableau. Data Analysis can be done very fast with Tableau and the visualizations are created in the form of dashboards and worksheets.

Tableau connects and extracts the data stored in various places. It can pull data from any platform imaginable. A simple database such as an excel, pdf, to a complex database like Oracle, a database in the cloud such as Amazon webs services, Microsoft Azure SQL database, Google Cloud SQL and various other data sources can be extracted by Tableau.

When I thought of writing these blogs, I wanted to start with something I really like and something that could be understood by all easily. Cricket is India’s heartbeat and IPL (Indian Premier League) is one of the most watched tournaments across the world. I cant think of a better way to showcase some Tableau visualizations using IPL Data than anything else! Hope you find this insightful.

The IPL dataset used in these visualizations is sourced from Kaggle.

How many matches are played each season ?

From the above Bar graph we can see that, around 50–60 matches are played in each season starting from 2008 until now. Remember, in the years 2011–2013 there were 9–10 teams that were participating. Hence the total matches count is high in those three years.

Also, looking at the highest score each season, the one that stands out is the score of Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. Bangalore scored a whopping 263/5 against Pune Warriors India. Chris Gayle’s monumental knock of 175 not out is yet to be beaten! It could very well be unbeaten for many more years to come.

Which is the most successful team in the IPL so far ?

Well, you are in for a surprise here. (If you are a CSK fan!) The most successful team in the IPL is the team with most number of wins. Its Mumbai Indians as they lead the pack with 104 matches, closely followed by CSK & KKR with 99 and 91 each respectively. Do you know that CSK was banned from the IPL for a couple of years, Probably that cost them the most successful team tag!

Top ‘Player of the Match’ Winners

Ah! This Bubble graph is so cool! As the above Bubble graph shows Its Chris Gayle with most ‘Player of the Match’ titles followed by AB de Villiers. MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma top the Indians list with 17 titles each. Its no wonder that the overseas players enjoy IPL as much as the Indian players do.

Matches Played at each Stadium ?

As expected, the usual homegrounds of the regular 8 teams that participate top the list. No wonder that, ‘Mecca of Indian Cricket’ Eden Gardens is one among the top three.

Number of Tosses won by each team & Toss Decision ?

Mumbai Indians have won the most of the tosses (87 times) and decided to field first on 53 occasions. It can also be seen that most of the teams prefer chasing to batting first. CSK, However are an exception to this as they have liked to set the target on 47 occasions than chase the target down. (40 times)

The above visualizations are only the preliminary ones. However, many other visualizations can be achieved. Stay Tuned!
