Use bookmark and selection functions to create a toggle switch between chart and table on Power BI.

In my previous articles, I talked about data integration of data layer, DAX function of calculation layer, and some tips of the display layer. Today I want to talk about a function that makes your reports closer to business user needs. A toggle switch lets you display both chart and table (display of percentage and absolute numbers) on the same page without changing tabs. This function is valuable for any level of the audience, especially high-level management. The leadership team always looks at trends/charts first, then dig into those details they are concerned about, which is why this function can help you.

Four steps to creating a toggle switch

Build two kinds of components (chart, table) ->Set bookmark to each component -> Set bookmark visibilities -> put on buttons/icons

(1)Build two kinds of components (chart, table)

Select the component that you want to show to your users, the easiest step ever.

(2)(3) Set a bookmark to each component and adjust the visibilities

The function is under ‘View’ in the toolbar of the power bi desktop

We use the selection function first to set the visibility of each component on the panel. First of all, we have two-component on the panel, one for a table(name: table in below chart) and one for a chart(Name: Base Measurement xxx in the below explanation chart).

Now, hide the visibility of the chart as the first view and create a bookmark called ‘table’ to save it. The same process to create a second bookmark is called ‘chart.’ This time, we hide the visibility of the table. You will have one bookmark to show the table only and another to show the chart only.

(4) Put two buttons (or you can upload your own icons) to let users make a selection

Now let’s go to the button setting and enable the action function. To connect buttons with bookmarks.

Connect table button with table bookmark, and chart button with chart bookmark

Here is the result

Switch between chart and table

Leverage on this setting, you can start your dashboard with a full view of trends through a chart and give more details through the table. Happy learning
