Anavii Market, a leader in improving accessibility to premium, third-party verified hemp-derived CBD products, today announced its collaboration on a new venture — to research and assess the biomedical applications of hemp-derived products in microgravity.

Companies joining Anavii Market in the collaboration include: Space Tango, a leader in the commercialization of space through R&D, bioengineering and manufacturing in microgravity, and Atalo Holdings, a vertically integrated ag-tech company who will provide the certified seed for the mission. The venture will explore the various aspects of hemp, but particularly those associated with biomedical and health uses, focusing on enhancing hemp’s applications, efficacy and value.

Space Tango has wide experience with analyzing new breakthroughs in microgravity in order to improve life on Earth, conducting over 88 experiments in the microgravity environment since 2016. “Using microgravity, we envision a future where many of the next breakthroughs in healthcare, plant biology and technology may well occur off the planet Earth,” said co-founder and chairman Kris Kimel of Space Tango.

And this may be true for the newly researched hemp plant.

“When we send plants to the International Space Station, we eliminate one core, constant force, to which plants are well-adapted — gravity,” explained Dr. Joe Chappell, a member of the Space Tango Science Advisory Team who specializes in drug development and design and has personally conducted microgravity research on the ISS. “When plants are ‘stressed,’ they pull from a genetic reservoir to produce compounds that allow them to adapt and survive. Understanding how plants react in an environment where the traditional stress of gravity is removed can provide new insights into how adaptations come about and how researchers might take advantage of such changes for the discovery of new characteristics, traits, biomedical applications and efficacy.”

Prior to the 2014 Farm Bill, that legalized hemp production and marketing in the United States under the Hemp Pilot Program, the US hemp industry was uncharted territory, but over the past four years, successful field research has proved the market potential of the hemp crop.

“Hemp is a very new plant to the agricultural and biomedical world that has tremendous research opportunity,” said Anavii Market co-founder Annie Rouse, who also analyzed the plant under a US Fulbright Scholarship. “In general, science has a fair understanding of the plant’s functions for food and fiber, but cannabinoids, like CBD, are a new realm. There are more than 100 other cannabinoids in the hemp plant, so imagine the possibilities in improving the efficacy of just one of those cannabinoids, and the breakthroughs it could have for the future of humanity.”
