Nexus 5x after 6 months

Perhaps all of you already know that the Nexus phones are made in collaboration with Google, so basically these are Google phones. The first thing that comes in my mind when I hear nexus, is that all the nexus devices have the newest android all the time. This is one of the reasons why I choose this phone over the others. The other reason is the finger print scanner, which is one of the fastest by the way. I’ll keep it as short as possible so I won’t bother you with the specs, you can find them here.

It feels great in the hand. It is light, it’s not slippery at all, although it’s a fingerprint magnet but I’’ve seen much worse cases. I own the 16 GB version which is not enough all the time, but it can be handled with the unlimited storage space on Google photos. If you can and have the opportunity I would recommend the 32 GB version. I would give a seven out of ten, mostly because sometimes it’s laggy in a way that I have to restart my phone. This happens once a week or so. But maybe this is because I’’m a so called heavy user, and it is possible that my expectations were a bit to high for the phone. The fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone is in a great placement. I often catch myself putting my index finger on the back of other phones. Besides the placement it is super fast. I’ve seen it with my own eyes it is faster as the scanner on the Samsung Galaxy Edge 6.

Sometimes the phone gets hot, especially with heavy usage, but it’s nothing to worry about. I can’t say anything about how the phone behaves in a case, I just bought one a month ago. So far I’m positively impressed with the case, it’s super light feels great in the hand. Here is the official site from where you can buy one.

The camera on the phone is amazing, best camera I’ve ever had on any smartphone. In the other hand the camera app is horrible, it’s super laggy. When other apps (e.g. Snapchat) are using the camera it freezes. If you use the HDR mode, you have to be very patient. But, here is an important thing, the pictures I took with it, are great. Here some sample photos.

The overall performance is not what I had expected but as I said it’s a solid seven. The lags appear only when I’m using the camera. This is a software issue, I’m sure they are already fixing this, or it will be fixed with the newest Android N. The battery isn’t the best either but I can get trough a day. The screen-on time on average is 3 hours which can be categorized in the middle class of battery performances. Apps are running well, the only app that made me some problems is Snapchat, or basically any app that involves the camera.

USB type-C — well this can be seen as an advantage but also a disadvantage. One day every device will have type-c connectivity, so this phone is ahead of his time. The type-c is faster on charging and data transfer and also reversible, all in all it’s great. But you have to carry your charger everywhere you go, unless you buy some more cables. I have no idea why but the cable included in the box is type-c to type-c it means that if you don’t have this kind of USB connectivity on your laptop or PC you can’t connect the two devices. Which is odd because the Nexus 6P has a type-c to 2.0 cable included. It is not that of a big deal you can buy a type-c cable almost everywhere. Be aware there are some bad ones in the market so I recommend you, to read the reviews first, before buying.

The pros and cons: the biggest pros are the camera, the finger print scanner and of course, the up to date Android versions. The cons are that the camera app is laggy and slow, the apps using the camera cause a crash of the phone sometimes.

Is it worth it? I would say yes, especially for the tech geeks like me who doesn’t want so spend a fortune on a modern phone. For the ones who are looking for a fast reliable phone without any extra, they are for sure more options to look at. It was a little overpriced especially the 16 GB version, but now the price of the phone is much lower. Around 270$ for the 32 GB version on eBay.

At the button line, the phone is amazing I had much fun using it, but it is not for everybody.
