Embracing Change: A Journey from Lockdown to Digital Nomadism

Looking back at 2022, it was the most restrictive period of my life. Shanghai lockdown, running from the law in Hainan, being caught and isolated in a hot spring hotel, lining up for COVID tests, and then another lockdown in Hainan — everything was unbelievable and left me unconsciously fearful.

However, it was precisely at that year that I found the opportunity to embark on a digital nomad lifestyle. In Riyue Bay, Hainan, I began experimenting with remote work, enjoying beach life, starting surfing and free diving, and making surfer friends. I fell deeply in love with this lifestyle, which was both free and disciplined.

Just when I was celebrating my successful runaway from the lockdown, Hainan started lockdown. The daily routine of being awakened by police sirens for COVID testing made me keenly feel the deprivation of freedom. Fueled by fear, I decided to return to Taiwan.

Back in this land, I finally had the chance to delve into Taiwan’s surfing scene and discover the best surf spots. I also made friends with some amazing surfers. For someone who had lived overseas for many years, this experience was both fascinating and precious. Finally, when foreign friends asked about Taiwan, I could answer more than, “I don’t know much about Taiwan.” That feeling was truly fantastic!

To explore a more diverse digital nomad life, I spent a month in Chiang Mai and resided for four months in Bali. This not only provided me with a deeper understanding of the digital nomad lifestyle but also marked my first time living alone in a place where Chinese wasn’t spoken.

Meeting friends from all around the globe made me truly appreciate the richness and diversity of cultures. Despite our different backgrounds, we discovered shared interests and topics, engaging in activities like surfing, diving, dancing, and traveling together — embracing the beauty of life collectively.

Reflecting on the past two years, what was initially a miserable and restrictive lockdown turned out to be the catalyst for my entry into the digital nomad lifestyle. This period of time has taught me a profound lesson: there’s no absolute good or bad in life, and every segment of our journey holds unique value. Learning to embrace the changes that occur during our travels will bring about substantial growth and beautiful rewards.
