JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEARNERS OF UST ANGELICUM COLLEGE COMPETE IN THE MOST AWAITED INTER-LEVEL MATHSCI QUIZ BEE

By Joshua Angelo Mallillin

The chosen students from the Junior High School Department and the Home Study Program competed in the much-anticipated Inter-Level MathSci Quiz Bee with the theme “Science and Mathematics Unite: Towards Building Resilient and Climate-Ready Communities”, which was held on February 18th at 9 a.m. via the Zoom and Google Meet platforms. Only one of the five teams that competed was victorious. Allain Wong and Nicanor Pascual from the Home Study Department who represented Team Archimedes were declared the winners.

Students from YS8 to YS11 who have excelled academically in Science and Mathematics were hand-picked to compete in this online competition. The questions were created by the teachers of the aforementioned departments. The names of the groups honored the great mathematicians and scientists who paved the way for future generations. Einstein, Newton, Descartes, Curie, and Archimedes were the names of the five teams that were formed.

There were three levels to the competition. The easy round was a multiple-choice quiz in which one point was awarded for each correct answer, whereas the average and difficult rounds were short supply tests in which the representative must type in the correct answer. The average round was worth 3 points, while the difficult round was worth 5 points.

Because the students were given enough time to solve mathematical equations, the competition lasted nearly three hours. Each team should send a representative to enter their response into the Quizziz application. Students and a teacher who can guide them can talk and discuss in Google Meet. The questions changed as the competition progressed. That was why communication was so important, especially when it came to problem-solving.

Only one winner was announced at the end of the competition. The other groups’ placements were not announced. The HSP Department was the winner, receiving 59/90 points. Archimedes was a well-known Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer, and inventor from the ancient city of Syracuse in Sicily.

This competition was well-executed and a lot of fun. The competition aimed to dispel the notion that Mathematics and Science are difficult and intimidating subjects.
