UST ANGELICUM LIBRARY HOSTS THE SINGING BEE DURING THE 87th NATIONAL BOOK WEEK
by Matthew Ysmael P. Atienza
“Anxiety killed me at first, but when I let my mind calm down, I realized that I should enjoy and be myself because being myself is the only thing that would make me win.” A wonderful statement said by Claire Eunice R. Dolendo from 10W1 who was the 1st Runner-up in the Singing Bee.
This Singing Bee was conducted and held by the UST Angelicum College’s Library during the 87th National Book Week. In the Singing Bee, the contestants were limited to Junior High School learners who have volunteered or were picked from each of the sections. It was officially held on November 12, 2021 in a Google Meeting. The opening remarks were given by the Senior Librarian of the FELMRC (Fr Ed Lumboy Memorial Resource Center), Ms. Michelle A. Esmilla, and she was also the one who supervised all the contests that were conducted.
The contest had elimination rounds. There were two different categories to this contest and those were namely, “To Be Continued”, and “To Be Corrected”. Each category consisted of different genres of music, such as Pop, OPM, Classical, and R&B.
The point systems were based on the genres of music: for Pop, the learner who achieved the correct answer would receive 2 points; for OPM, 3 points; for Classical, 5 points; and for R&B, 5 points.
Points were gained when the learner who raised his or her hand first got the right answer. If the learner failed to get the correct answer, then the next learner who would raise his or her hand may steal the chance to answer. However, once a learner had already raised his or her hand then he/she would no longer be allowed to lower it.
In each of the categories, there were 3 rounds except for the tiebreaker. “To Be Continued” was purely a game where one must fully know the song to get the right answer. Learners must continue the song that is played by the host and this chance is only given to the one who has raised his/her hand first.
The second category, “To Be Corrected”, was where the host would present a song; however, the song contained a wrong phrase or lyric and the learner that raised his or her hand first must correct the wrong lyric in the song.
The official UST Angelicum College Facebook account posted a video containing the winners, from the 2nd Runner-up to the Champion in each and every competition in the National Book Week.
In the Singing Bee, the 2nd Runner-up was Dominic John L. Guillermo, a learner from the class of 11W1.
Then, the 1st Runner-up was a learner from the class of 10W1, Claire Eunice R. Dolendo.
Last, but not the least, the Champion of this contest was Sam Reondanga from 11W2.
Now, finally, the winner’s prizes. The only ones that received a prize were the 2nd Runner-up, the 1st Runner-up, and of course, the Champion. They received a certificate, a pen, and a letter along with a few books from the UST Angelicum College.
What is extremely thoughtful was that the school gave the winners 2 options to receive their prizes. The first option was to pick the prizes up directly from the guard at the Sto. Domingo Gate at the UST Angelicum College Campus. The second option was to receive the prizes via Grab or any courier. However, the winner will be the one to book and pay for the delivery fee of the prizes.
