It’s Christmastime in the City

The holidays are here. Pause for all wallets to weep. After a year of COVID-19 and a collective striving to return to normal, the holiday season is back with tenacious corporate advertisements promising a Christmas like no other for just $59.99. While everyone at home is waiting for that IPhone 13 underneath their tree, retailers are wishing for paper, plastic, and cardboard this holiday season. After Texas’s freeze in February caused a halt in plastic and resin production, prices have soared and driven demand for an alternative-recyclable, paper packaging. The increase in demand has been exacerbated from a 77% year over year increase in e-commerce since the beginning of COVID-19 in March last year (Adobe Digital Economy Index). Adobe’s reports from June 2020 indicate a 13% year over year increase in holiday sales, bringing in an estimated 142.5 billion dollars. As consumption patterns rise, small businesses are struggling to keep pace with large corporations that can handle the financial burden of skyrocketing producer prices. Efforts to stay competitive and regulate prices have propelled small businesses to increase purchases. The ability to order more products grants business owners the proper purchasing power to negotiate lower costs. So this holiday season, take a break from your Amazon shopping cart and check out these Los Angeles hotspots that supports our local businesses:

“Unique Markets was founded to celebrate and help the ‘small’ folks, the businesses that don’t get the spotlight. The Underdogs, the Dreamers, the Risk-Takers… The Others.

Our founder, Sonja Rasula, an Asian-American woman with a disability, understands first-hand the positive impact that comes with radical diversity and inclusion. We’ve always curated our markets with intent and focus on showcasing the minority as majority — in other words, the majority of sellers are woman-owned and minority-owned (BIPOC, LGBTQ+) businesses.”
