The 12 principles of animation are guidelines created by ex-Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. They were made to teach animators how to create lifelike characters. This post will explain one principle.

Timing is another principle that is very simple but vitally important. With more frames of animation, a motion is slower, and with less frames it is faster. Timing is simply how quickly or slowly something moves. This is important for providing realistic movement to an animation. Timing can show character, emotion, weight, and more. If a box moves very quickly we know that it is light. If a box moves very slowly we know that it is heavy. Timing applies to everything in an animation and is therefore necessary to consider.
