The late singer is another example of R&B + Hip-hop’s connection to anime

In 2001, singer Aaliyah made a anime commercial to promote her self-titled album. Seven years after her death, Michiko & Hatchin was released. One of the show’s main characters was based off Aaliyah.

If Aaliyah created a full-length anime, it’d be fun to imagine what her character would wear. Aaliyah’s fashion is still referenced, copied and admired to this day.

Her signature baggy pants might take on a more exaggerated silhouette, billowing dramatically with every step as she navigates the vibrant, animated world around her. And of course, no Aaliyah-inspired anime character would be complete without her trademark sunglasses, adding a touch of mystery and allure to her persona.

Her anime character would likely sport a wardrobe that mirrors her real-life style but with a fantastical twist. Picture her in sleek, form-fitting bodysuits adorned with intricate patterns and embellishments, reminiscent of her music video outfits but infused with elements of anime fantasy.

From her iconic crop tops paired with baggy pants to her sleek, futuristic ensembles, she epitomized the aesthetic of the late ’90s and early 2000s. Imagining her as an anime character opens up a realm of creative possibilities for her wardrobe
