Action/Adventure Anime With Female Protagonists Who Aren’t Overshadowed By Male Characters

Sometimes anime series, especially action/adventure, will feature a female protagonist who takes a “back seat” to the male protagonist. Or worse: they become a “damsel in distress” and aren’t able to defend, protect, or fight for themselves independently.

So the anime in this post will avoid that, and talk only about action/adventure shows with a female protagonist who’s on equal footing with the male protagonist.

Or in some cases: even better than that!

1. Guardian Of The Sacred Spirit

Balsa is the lead character in this adventure series, with the story focusing on a run-away prince in danger of being killed by his OWN people.

Balsa fights with a spear as opposed to the usual swords seen in anime. Which makes the action scenes some of the most fresh and unique.

The animation is gorgeous for its time. Production I.G Studio’s can be thanked for that (they made Psycho Pass).

2. Shakugan No Shana

This anime has both a male and female protagonist. But Shana’s definitely not overshadowed at all. In fact she’s the main highlight (the anime is named after her).

It’s 3 seasons long and has some of the strongest anime characters you’lll ever see, if that interests you. With some romance alongside the action, which gets better and better as the series progresses.

3. Akame Ga Kill

Like Shakugan No Shana, you have a male/female protagonist. But the female isn’t overshadowed (the show is named after her).

If you want something extremely violent, a little deep, with some of the best action an adventure anime has to offer, watch this.

You won’t be disappointed, but you WILL be left with a feeling of deep sadness. Considering the unorthodox role Akame Ga Kill plays in terms of deaths, murder and characters in general.

4. Slayers

Action/adventure in a fantasy world, and a male/female protagonist. Made by the same studio as Shakugan No Shana (J.C STAFF).

Slayers is one of the best examples from a classic point of view (made in the 1990's).

It’s like Fairy Tail without the fan-service. Because it’s fun, enjoyable and has a range of characters who offer something different to the overall story.

5 seasons long.

5. Sword Art Online

Both Asuna and Kirito balance each other out in this action/adventure series for gamers. It’s one of the best examples alongside Slayers.

It’s 3 seasons long (3rd season in development) and has a movie released in 2017, called: Ordinal Scale.

6. Inuyasha

Inuyasha is a classic series with a strong focus on both male/female protagonists.

Unlike other action/adventure series, romance plays a BIG role in how the anime progresses. And considering it’s over 100+ episodes long, it’s the longest anime series you’ll watch on this list.

Similar action/adventure anime to try (with good female protagonists):

  • Fate Apocrypha.
  • Samurai Champloo.
  • Owari No Seraph.
  • Scrapped Princess.
  • The Ambition Of Oda Nobuna.
  • The Ancient Magus Bride.
