Takaki Toono and Akari Shinohara are childhood friends, but circumstances beyond their control break them as they grow up.
They promise to stay in touch, but time and distance separate them. However, their memories of each other remain ever-present.
Stuck in the past, Takaki and Akari hope to see each other again.

The title 5 Centimeters per Second comes from the speed at which cherry blossom petals fall, with petals being a metaphor for human life.
This implies that though life moves slowly, changes happen. People may be together now, but life can slowly drift them apart.
