Why It’s Okay Not To Be Chosen According To My Beloved Flower
On Finding Friendship In Unexpected Places
INTRODUCTION
I discovered My Beloved Flower last November after hearing Fuji Kaze’s song “Hana (花)” through a YouTube recommendation.
Immediately, I was hooked by its melancholic yet upbeat melody and upon closer look, I was surprised to learn that the lyrics are about nurturing one’s “inner flower” instead of focusing on things that fade.
And like flowers, we too, will wither in time.
This experience became even more meaningful when I discovered that this was the theme song used in the series My Beloved Flower.
The story speaks of the loneliness felt by the 4 main characters for “not being chosen” by the people around them.
Eventually, these people meet by chance and in their shared experiences, find a home in each other.
I finished the last episode on the eve of Christmas Day and it just made my Christmas better. The cold weather, familial atmosphere along with the coziness of this drama were the best gifts I could ask for.
Of all the Japanese drama I watched, this is my favorite of all time.
