Well… we’re still here.

2020 took a lot from us, including our original site. But enough of this community has survived for us to do our annual end of year survey, where the AniTAY community lists what their favorite anime shows and movies of the year were. And even though this is only my second time doing the survey, this proved to be a more interesting go-around than last time, with some people bowing out, some new blood coming in to diversify the results, and old faces returning to take part as well. And we even finally settled one of our long-running issues to boot!

The idea is simple (the rules, less so): each AniTAY contributor is allowed to vote for ten total shows and/or movies based on rank, with their most favorite getting ten points, and their least-most favorite getting one point, effectively a ranked-choice vote (however, ballots with between 5 to 10 entries are accepted as well). Any anime that got an official western release is fair game, which unfortunately means non-officially released media like the Demon Slayer movie aren’t allowed, but anything that came out a previous year to then see a wide release the next year is eligible (Beastars, for example, was disqualified last time, but fair game this time). Also, any pre-existing show from a previous year that got another season/cour this year is allowed as well.

Also, this year confirmed one new rule for clarification: any show with a split season over two years, and if the delay between seasons is shorter than 12 weeks, said show counts into the incoming year. This means if something started in 2019 but went into 2020, it counts as a 2020 show, and if something started in 2020 but is going into 2021, it isn’t eligible (sorry, Jujutsu Kaisen). This also means Re:zero 2, despite being split as well, counts as a 2020 show since the delay between part 1 and 2 is over a season long.

With the rules stated, here are the results: 23 contributors filled in ballots, resulting in 57 total entries getting points. While this is smaller than 2019’s total turnout, this was still a varied field, and makes for a respectable list nevertheless. The results will be revealed over the coming week, and you should also stay tuned for a special podcast episode, where yours truly gets to go through the nearly 60 items listed, and reveal the top 10 shows that triumphed in this battle royale. For today however, we’ll go through the shows that got from 1 to 10 points:
