1913 Snow Storm in Marin

Snow at Yolanda (San Anselmo), January 8, 1913. Anne T. Kent California Room Collection.

Marin Journal, January, 1913:

The people of Marin County witnessed a genuine winter scene on Thursday morning, January 9, 1913. Soon after midnight snow commenced falling and by 7 o’clock there was a white mantel two inches or more in thickness covering everything….

It was the first snow storm worthy of note for thirty years in Marin county and was thoroughly enjoyed by the people…..

Snowballing was indulged in during the day, and everybody who appeared on the streets was a target for youths upon every street corner. No passerby escaped -old and young had to stand the storm. Almost everybody took it good naturedly, but some of the throwers went crazy and exceeded the limit….A number of windows were broken and numerous persons were slightly bruised….
