California Room makes over 60 years of Marin’s early newspapers available online (2014)

by Carol Acquaviva

The California Room is excited to announce that as a result of a major digitization project, over 60 years of Marin’s early newspapers are available to search and browse online.

The Marin County Journal (1861–1888) and its successor the Marin Journal (1888–1922), and the Marin Tocsin (1890–1918) can be accessed via the California Digital Newspaper Collection from anywhere, at any time, at no cost.

Here are some examples of the wonderful things to discover:

Thanksgiving Proclamation from Gov. Leland Stanford, amidst the “noise and strife” of the Civil War.

Reaction to the devastation of the 1906 earthquake and fire.

The effect of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic on local schools (December 5, 1918).

Local Intelligence, a regular feature announcing social goings-on (August 9, 1888).

Reports on fires (November 1919).

Temperance (September 8, 1892)

This project would not have been possible without the generous donations of many people, including the Craemer family. We are most grateful for their support.

Stay tuned for the next newspaper we will have available to you: the Marin Tocsin (1890–1918).
