Celebrating the Centennial of the Tamalpais Conservation Club
by Laurie Thompson
Please join us on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 12 noon for a talk & book-signing by Barry Spitz celebrating the recent publication of “ To Save a Mountain: The 100-Year Battle for Mt. Tamalpais.”
Published to celebrate the centennial of the Tamalpais Conservation Club (TCC), Spitz’s book highlights the multi-faceted history of Marin’s iconic mountain and discusses the many individuals and organizations who made possible its preservation as public open space.
The Tamalpais Conservation Club (TCC), publishers of Spitz’ new work, was founded in 1912.
An article in the February 24, 1912 “Sausalito News” tells of its founding:
“Fully 200 men and women who love old Tamalpais gathered at Tamalpais Centre last Sunday morning to organize a movement to secure a lease of the mountain for a great reserve in which the people might enjoy themselves without trespassing….the best speech of the day was delivered by Supervisor Louis Pistolesi. He spoke of the beauty of the mountain, its benefit to humanity and pointed out the four plans whereby the reserve might be secured…..The meeting adopted a constitution designating the organization of the Tamalpais Conservation Club, having for its purposes the protection of the mountain from vandalism and the securement of the mountain for the enjoyment of the people.”
“J.H. Cutter, a bronzed and bony climber of the peak for years, was elected president; Attorney William Benman of San Francisco, vice-president….”
