Thanks to a grant from the Craemer Family Foundation and contributions from many of you, last year we created a digitized and searchable collection of historic Marin newspapers from 1861–1922, available on the California Room Digital Archive.

Now you can also search these papers through the California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC), together with other historic California newspapers from across the state.

The California Room is grateful to the CDNC’s Brian Geiger and Luis Baquera for working with us to make this happen.

If you aren’t already familiar with the CDNC, it’s a powerful database containing over 600,000 pages of significant historical California newspapers going back as early as 1846 including the first California newspaper, the Californian, and the first daily California newspaper, the Daily Alta California.

Marin Journal, 4 July 1910. Anne T. Kent California Room Collection.

Marin County history and genealogy is found in abundance in this digital collection, not only in the papers we recently contributed -the Marin Journal and the Marin County Tocsin — but also in other papers hosted there such as the Sausalito News ; the San Francisco Call. Daily Alta California and the

For example, if you search for Lake Lagunitas you come up with 783 results in ten newspapers. The results can easily be fine-tuned by year or publication as well as by type of article (advertisement; article, etc.). Among the articles found is one from the Marin County Journal dated October 26, 1872 titled “Water” which speaks of a new water supply for San Rafael to be piped from a reservoir along Lagunitas Creek -today’s Lake Lagunitas.

We are grateful to all of you who partnered with us to make this happen and hope you make many new discoveries as you explore local history through these fascinating newspaper collections!
