We invite you to join us on Monday, May 21, 2018 when author and historian Lynn Downey presents Levi Strauss: The Man Who Gave Blue Jeans to the World.
The event will take place at 6:30 pm at the Anne T. Kent California Room Map & Special Collections Annex at 1600 Los Gamos, Suite 182, San Rafael.
Levi Strauss is most famous for helping to create the world’s first blue jeans. He was also a savvy businessman, civic leader, and generous philanthropist. But thanks to the loss of his company’s records in the 1906 earthquake and fire, he has become more of a figure of myth than historical fact.
Did you know that Levi Strauss & Co. had a government contract with San Quentin? As early as 1876 the State of California awarded the dry goods contract for the prison system to Levi Strauss & Co. and soon prisoners were using the blankets, towels, and other soft goods from the famous company. The two institutions kept up their business relationship until well after the turn of the century.
The talk will be followed by a book-signing and refreshments.
