In her book Growing Up in a Frank Lloyd Wright House, she recounts the joys and pitfalls of owning and living in a Wright-designed home. This free program, open to the general public, is 7–8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Marin County Civic Center, Board of Supervisors Chambers, Room 330.

Each month throughout the celebratory year of the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center, an important date is highlighted by the illumination of the Civic Center’s 200-foot golden spire. For March 2013, the spire will be illuminated from dusk to midnight on March 25th. On that date 55 years ago, Frank Lloyd Wright presented his complete set of drawings for Marin’s Civic Center to the Board of Supervisors, and that evening he presented his plans to a large welcoming audience at San Rafael High School. During that meeting, Wright said his design showed “a great concordance with the nature of the beautiful setting of the hills of Marin.” He assured the public that he would not raze the hills on the site but instead “bridge” them with his buildings. Our National Historic Landmark is a testament to Wright’s vision, as, in his words, “a good building was one that makes the landscape more beautiful than before that building was even built.”

  • All Marin students are invited to participate in the New Youth Photography Competition for the Marin County Fair 2013, titled “Photographs of the Marin County Civic Center.” The competition is in partnership with the Marin County Fair and Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center Conservancy, and it celebrates the architectural and cultural legacy of the Civic Center during its 50th anniversary. Entry forms are due at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in the Fair Office. Visit marinfair.org for more details.
