Thanks to the generosity of historian and postcard collector Jim Staley and Marin philanthropist Jeff Craemer, the Anne T. Kent California Room will be the repository for a large portion of Jim Staley’s impressive postcard collection illustrating historic Marin County.

To date we’ve received the portions of the Staley Collection documenting Corte Madera, Larkspur, San Quentin, Fairfax, San Geronimo Valley, Camp Taylor & Nicasio. Over the course of 2016, many more Marin County towns will be added.

From time to time we will reveal -through Staley’s postcards and captions- facets of our county’s rich history.

Staley tells us that the image on the postcard pictured here is “the Victoria Memorial Home which opened in 1920 as a home for British veterans of World War I. It was located in western Fairfax, very near the site of today’s Lefty Gomez baseball/soccer field. Notice the train trestle on the far right. After crossing the trestle, a westbound train would stop at Bothin Station near Hill Farm and then enter a 3,190-foot tunnel which led to Woodacre.”
