Like many other followers on social media sites, I have begun to receive unsolicited and definitely unwelcome messages. These messages inform me that if I vote Democratic in the national election on November 3, I will be going to hell. Not only that, but as a Democrat I am a demon who worships Satan.

Speaking of hell, what the hell is going on with these people?

All of these messages come from white, Republican, American, Christian Evangelicals. Some of these Evangelicals are my relatives. …

My four cats have been reading Facebook over my shoulders. That means they have seen all of the photos posted by our friends of their pet dogs sitting on Santa’s lap.

Local SPCA and Humane Society branches across the U.S. sponsor Santa visits for pets every Christmas season. This is fun for owners of dogs and maybe other small animals except cats.

Most cat owners have a less welcoming reaction. Anyone who has ever cajoled, pushed, pulled, or otherwise crammed an angry cat into a carrier to leave home for any reason shudders at the thought of a Santa visit.

Since it’s November, the U.S. is awash in non-stop, over-the-top Christmas decorations, toy displays, and even commercials showing new cars wrapped in huge bows. Red, white, and green surround us everywhere.

Actually, we can’t blame November for the onslaught of Christmas ads, merchandise, commercials, and television movies threatening to overwhelm us. The first wave of Christmas stuff started appearing on store shelves in September as soon as the back-to-school items were whisked away

True, Christmas didn’t completely take over as long as Halloween’s overabundance of merchandise lured customers in, but the day after Halloween, wham! In the eyes and cash…

The Golden Girls cast in a (free) publicity photo

A friend called me last week to say that Target had sold out their Golden Girls Halloween costumes. She sounded as shocked as I was. Sold out, yeah, we could understand their popularity.

But calling these clothes costumes? Really?

For some of us, the Golden Girls actresses and the roles each played had a profound and lasting effect. And the clothes worn on the show never really went out of style. I’ll come back to this.

During the prime time, first-run heyday of the program during the late 1980s, my friends and I watched our mothers and aunts laugh at…

Use your handwriting to make extra income

Cursive writing is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity. The New York Times in an online, April 13, 2019 article attributed this partly to the fact that most public school systems stopped teaching cursive when it was removed from the Common Core standards in 2010.

Since 2010, at least two dozen states have reinserted a cursive writing course into the third grade curriculum. Psychologists insist “long-hand” writing is helpful to develop parts of the brain. The majority of the tech-savvy consider it a holdover from a slower age.

Regardless of your opinion about…

Two weeks ago, I posted my last article on Medium. I posted a light-hearted poem a couple of days later, but otherwise, I stopped posting. At the time, I felt my last efforts were my worst writing since I began posting on Medium almost three months ago.

I was afraid I had lost my edge. I was out of ideas, I told myself.

In the back of my mind, though, I realized that I have been putting off writing anything that goes bone-and-soul-deep. …

And don’t pretend you don’t know who I mean

Look, folks. Since we’ve had such a hard time gaining the attention of our President, I suggest we toss around some new ideas.

Removing Fox News from his White House television sets might cause him to have a heart attack, so we can’t do that. I don’t want him to have any kind of physical health problems. I want him to be able to stand trial for his crimes after we defeat him in 2020. …
