Despite forming the second largest national identity within the Arab-American community, Egyptians tend to be wildly underrepresented in Anglophone Arab literature and art. Anomaly seeks work from Egyptian writers, as well as Arab writers who have a relationship with Egypt, for an upcoming folio dedicated to showcasing the diversity of contemporary Egyptian writing and thought.
Content need not be overtly political to be considered, but preference will be given with work that interrogates normative notions of militarism, nationalism and what constitutes Egyptian identity. Please note this folio will heavily prioritize the voices of women, femme, and non-binary folks, as well as folks who’ve been marginalized and/or underrepresented by the Egyptian state (e.g. Copts, folks of Upper Egyptian and/or Nubian heritage, etc.)
Original work in English as well as new translations, especially of contemporary Egyptian writing, will be considered. Along with a brief bio, poets should send up to five pieces, and prose writers should send up to two pieces (either short stories or personal essays to hfahmy@wesleyan.edu.
