What is Akash Network?

The Akash Network is a secure, transparent, and decentralized cloud computing marketplace.

Akash Network acts as a two-sided cloud computing marketplace connecting those who have demand and supply of computing resources.

Who will use Akash Network?

One of competitive advantage of The Akash Network is introduction of a “unified layer above all providers on the marketplace so as to present clients with a single cloud platform, regardless of which particular provider they may be using.” (Overview of Akash Network)

  • Tenant: tenant hosting an application on the Akash network.
  • Provider: Each provider will host an agent which is a mediator between the Akash Network and the datacenter-local infrastructure.
  • Validator: An Akash node that is elected to be a validator in the DPoS consensus scheme. (Overview of Akash Network)

There are several advantages for tenants of computing resources such as: cost performance, usability, flexibility, performance.

The advantages for providers of computing resources is: enabling sharing economy of otherwise already (sunk cost) dedicated or temporarily-unused capacity.

Why does Akash need blockchain?

With a publicly-verifiable record of transactions within the network, Akash Network maintains a low barrier to entry for providers and ensures that clients can trust the resources.

Akash Token is a digital token, the $AKT which represents the currency of marketplace, enabled by blockchain-powered distributed exchange where clients post their desired resources for providers to bid on. Akash Network is implemented using blockchain technologies as a means of achieving consensus on the veracity of a distributed database. (Akash Network Overview)

Akash is a platform that allows clients to procure resources from providers, enabled by a blockchain-powered distributed exchange for computing resources. Akash Token (AKT) is the currency of this marketplace.

How does Akash work?

1. Tenants (developers, clients) write a file to the blockchain with desired requirements upon which providers place bids.

2. The lowest bid is picked and tenants can start using computing resources within Docker containers.

3. While computing resources are live, the payments are paid periodically to the providers in Akash token as long as the computer resources are available and settlement finality.

“To support running workloads on procured resources, Akash includes a peer-to-peer protocol for distributing workloads and deployment configuration to and between a client’s providers.

Workloads in Akash are defined as Docker containers. Docker containers allow for highly-isolated and configurable execution environments, and are already part of many cloud-based deployments today.” (Akash Network Overview)

“Akash Supercloud is a faster, better, and lower cost cloud built for Web 3.0, ensuring sovereignty, privacy, and access. Flexible and 90% lower in cost, our serverless computing platform is compatible with all major cloud providers, and all applications that run on the cloud.”

“Akash is a decentralized serverless cloud computing blockchain network built with Cosmos technology. They are committed to becoming a permissionless, open and secure cloud computing marketplace which maximizes the efficiency of cloud computing resource and greatly reduces its cost.” Forbole, Akash, the (decentralized) Airbnb or Uber in cloud services?

By leveraging the power of a free market and a permissionless, open cloud, Akash Network will unlock 85% of cloud compute capacity in 8.2 million data centers currently underutilized. Significantly more efficient and up to 10x lower in cost, our Supercloud provides the market with a compelling alternative to the cloud infrastructure oligopoly.

Today’s market for cloud computing is heavily consolidated, with the top 4 cloud service providers, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud dominating 70% of the entire market as of the end of 2019 . In this oligopolistic market structure, there is decreasing competition and over time, less choice and flexibility for […]

As we look to 2020, we see six key trends set to transform the future of the cloud: Cost Sovereignty, Containerization, Serverless Computing, Machine learning, Edge Infrastructure, Proof of Stake.

At Akash, we believe that by using the power of a free market, we can unlock 85% of capacity in 8.2 million data centers currently under-utilised today. We created the tools to activate an incentive structure that not only fairly distributes but will unlock network effects to accelerate growth.
