A friend of mine once told me about an all-office meeting she had at the law firm where she worked. She assumed the meeting would be something mundane, like a meeting about benefits.

She was shocked when the meeting was actually to discuss the fact that another lawyer in her firm had a two-year-long affair with one of the married partners. Word had gotten out in the legal community about the affair, so they had a two-hour-long meeting to discuss how to answer questions about the affair.

Because word of the affair, which did not involve my friend at all, got out, my friend who was the only other woman employed at the firm, was not allowed to attend events with any male partner unless another person was there because the firm was worried about how the situation would look.

This really affected her professional development, since she missed out on at least one major conference and several meetings because of this “rule.” My friend ultimately found her way out of that firm, fortunately.
