A step by step, week by week, progression of monetizing a travel blog from scratch. If you’re new please check out Iteration 0 for an explanation on this series.

Overview & Updates

  1. Experiments leading to over 200% improvement for IG Followers
  2. What about monetizing?
  3. Same short term goal
  4. Content & branding
  5. Yoga
  6. More data

1. 200% increase in IG followers

Significant Results:
Current IG Followers: 434
W0: 84
W1:112
W2: Took the week off :) It happens…
W3: 435

Experiment 1: If I follow major travel IG accounts, then I will gain followers through the attention displayed on those accounts, thus leading to an increase in followers.

Results: We went from 171 followers to 435 followers in 24 hours! This is a really shitty way to gain a following, but I’m going to stay true to “Traction” and continue to test different methods until they run their course. Thereafter, we’ll restart the “Bullseye” approach.

Experiment 2: If we use Morgans facebook account, link it to our IG (instead of mine), and added her friends, then we will see an exponential increase in our following.

Results: We saw a jump from 117 followers to 171 followers.

2. What about monetizing the blog

As discussed in the previous week, we are reconsidering our options for monetizing the blog. At this point, we are concentrating on nailing down a segment that we can provide real value to. I appreciate your patience :/

3. Same short term goal

We are looking to double our IG following by next Monday.
Goal: 868 followers

4. Content & branding

We are starting to understand which customer segments enjoy our content. We have been testing multiple different segments but are starting to reel in on a sarcastic vibe to travel. Since we don’t have a firm understanding of who our followers are, we haven’t put together a clear branding message.

Travel, sarcasm, street art, and learning new skills are areas that we are testing right now.

5. Yoga

Over the next 24 days, we are attending a Yoga retreat in Goa, India. Over this period we hope to understand yet another segment and more interestingly a contrast between lifestyles. We will explore the contrasts of a couple traveling who have different interests as they travel.

This should be fun!
