The never- ending conflict between data privacy and data security

2018 will be remembered as the year that brought back our attention to data privacy. It started with the Facebook- Cambridge Analytica scandal and continued with the implementation of General Data Protection Regulation in the EU and most recently the data breaches at Marriott and Quora. I hope that in 2019 the gap between data privacy and data security will be addressed.

Most of the data security or data protection products deployed in organizations today violate the data privacy of its employees or its customers. The main reason behind this is that those solutions require analysis of a mass of data and analysis means data access.

Whenever there is a design conflict between privacy and security, the security factor gets higher priority. Recently we changed our mindset that there should be a balance between performance and data security, but we still didn’t put enough attention on the data privacy factor.

privacy is not something that i’m merely entitled to it’s an absolute prerequisite

So, how do we choose our data security product?

The most effective way to choose your data security product will be to evaluate and analyse your potential risks and then try to mitigate those risks with systems or infrastructure protection systems.

When decision makers consider a data security solution to protect their organizations’ data, they are looking to address questions such as; does the solution offer end-to-end protection? What kind of protection this solution is focused on? What attacks or vulnerabilities can be identified using this tool? Does the vendor offered a tailored security option? What is the performance impact?

The improved way to choose your data security product

In 2019, we will need to improve our way of thinking in order to take into account the data privacy factors and be able to address more questions: What kind of data will be accessed? Who will have access to this data? For how long the data will be accessed? Will the data or part of it will be copied and stored on other sources?

Today, with the recent technology improvements we should put more efforts to resolve this conflict. We are able to process and analyze mass of data but yet to protect its data privacy.
