The Most Effective Way of Asking Questions as a UX Designer
We recently uploaded a new episode on “Thinking Faster & Smarter as a UX Designer” and asking the right kind of questions is key to that. Here’s a brief summary of the broad principles discussed in the video.
In this very fortunate age of the internet, we can have all the answers we could possibly want, only if we know how to search properly. In fact, knowing which problem to solve is actually half solving it. The more specific we are, the better solutions we can get. Here are a few examples of how you can make your questions more to the point:
❌ How do I learn UX Design?
✅ Can you recommend 3 most valuable resources?
Make your questions more actionable. This way, you’re also helping the other person to answer your question in the best possible manner for you. You must narrow it down & make your question as clear as possible to get the most helpful answer.
❌ How do I earn more?
✅ How do I pitch a higher price?
If you want to ‘earn more’, understand what you need to do in order to achieve that. Earning is actually a result of positioning & perception. In addition to your skillset & hard work, your self-branding & effective communication in pitching a higher price matters too. You must know your own worth well & subsequently convey it to others.
❌ Is it too late for me to begin?
✅ How do I manage my time & prioritize?
Vague questions like “Is it too late..” actually translate to the fear of running out of time. Instead of that, we should focus on how to manage the time & energy we have at present, more effectively & be grateful for it! We must learn how to prioritize well.
❌ How do I stand apart?
✅ How do I build a brand?
We must dig deep, observe & recognize what we lack & how we can gain the most in our careers or even, in our lives. Things we must concentrate on — how we can work on becoming better versions of ourselves, how we can discover & upgrade our strengths / skillset, how to build a brand & in turn stand apart from our online competitors.
The questions you’re asking everyday have the power to turn around your life. Use them wisely.
The above article is inspired from Ansh Mehra’s ‘Foundations for UX Design Series’ on YouTube. He has compiled some of the most key lessons he’s learnt so far as a self-taught UX Designer, hoping it will help every designer who begins after him.
Apart from YouTube, he discusses Design, Life and the Beyond on his Podcast called Take it Easy on Spotify. You can check out his work on www.anshmehra.com.
