It’s happening! Mobile computing has finally gone from being in our hands, or sitting on top of our desks, to straight up covering our eyes! Yikes?!

Yes, I’m talking about Meta and Apple’s headsets! Or…Eyesets? Maybe we can call them eyesets when they don’t weigh down our heads as much. The future of these headsets has the potential to change how we see the world.

I know this has been a long time coming. Humans really have been shaping how other humans view reality for centuries. Oh, the technology? Yes, that has also been in development for decades.

Despite the recent roar and rage about the Apple Vision Pro, and all the comparisons with Meta’s Quest 3, Xreal and so on, we all have mostly landed on the same conclusion — we’re not there yet. But we’re at the start of getting there!

Let’s think for a second about what happens when we are “there.” What tricks can the eyesets of the future play on our vision? What might we be able to see with eyesets that we can’t with our actual sets of eyes?

  1. Captions

As we move from vision to Vision OS, one thing our eyesets may see are captions. Caption often refers to a heading or explanatory text. In this case, you could think of captions as piece of text or other artifact that accompanies a real-world object. A caption could be static or interactive, and play a variety of different roles.

2. Animations

You may remember from elementary school that there are some key differences between living and non-living things. As a former science teacher and currently living object, I can tell you one thing non-living things can’t do is Move / Grow — yet! In the world of eyesets, static objects will be able to come to life, move, and even talk to us.

3. Holograms

Holograms will take things to a new level. These holograms may manifest independent of a real-world object and appear as if they were introduced to the real spaces we exist in.

You might have a hologram-dog running around, a friend’s hologram may show up when they FaceTime you, or maybe that holodog was just your friends avatar — we don’t judge.

Till that day when we finally upgrade our eyes to eyesets, let’s enjoy what we have. Let’s close our eyes, take a deep breath, and then open them, knowing for sure that what we see is really what we see.
