Ever wondered about the magic behind Snapchat filters? I used to ponder this each time I took a snap. Those fun overlays involve a cool blend of creativity and tech from quirky masks to location-based filters. It's amazing how a simple tap transforms our images into themed masterpieces.

Guess what you can create your own filter too! It’s not that complex. I’ve created a couple of filters on Snapchat and I have a total of a million views . I’ll help you in creating your first filter! All you have to do is just follow along with me. In the end, I’ll tell you how you can make money with filters.

First you’ll have to download a software called Lens Studio from Snap AR which is the software in which you’ll be creating the filters. Here’s the Link to the software. After opening the link select your operating system and download it.

An iphone in which snapchat is opened

We will be the creating a filter that will have 3 eyes one extra eye on the forehead .

Follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. Open Lens Studio that you have downloaded earlier. It should look something like this
Lensstudio
Homepage of Lens Studio

2. There are multiple templates from which you can get started by editing those and create new filters from them. For now we will be starting from scratch so select the ‘+ New Project’ button on the homepage which is on the left side, below Documentation .

3. After clicking that button a new window will appear and it will look something just like this

4. It has a lot of different options and menus don’t get overwhelmed . I’m here to explain everything :)

4. On clicking the + option here we will get various options but for now we need only one option i.e Face Inset

5. Click on Face Inset, after clicking on Face Inset a two new windows on the right will appear and you will have an extra mouth as the Face region is set to Mouth by default.

6. On the Face Inset menu change Face region option to Right Eye / Left Eye

I have selected right eye.

7. Here you can select the right eye you can move it all over the face and you can see it on the right side (in Preview) that where ever you move the eye it moves in preview too.

In the end it should look something like this on the Right Side / Preview

If you were able to keep up with me you should have the above filter. Woohoo congratulations 🥳 on creating your first filter!

You’ve successfully created the filter but how to use it on SnapChat and share it with your friends? 🤔

  • To use the lens on your device you have to publish the lens. To do that you have to click on Publish Lens on top left and then fill the form that contains Lens Name , Size, etc. I did not select the Lens Preview you can select it so that the user can see the preview of the lens.
  • Later you will be asked to login to your Snapchat account on your system and then you will be asked to select a lens folder.
  • It’s your first time so click on create new Lens Folder and give it a name and upload the filter to that folder.

After selecting that folder you’ll have to select some options. After that click on Upload and Publish. Set the visibility to Public and click on publish. That’s it, it’s as simple as that ! After a few minutes the snapchat team will verify your lens and it will be published. You can find your filter SnapCode and a link to your filter. You can access your filter with SnapCode / Link and share it with your friends ! Explore the software, keep creating cool filters.
