Will Virtual Reality be the next-gen teacher for our kids?
A few years back, I was working as a teaching volunteer with an organization in Bangalore, India, where I was helping a few underprivileged kids with their preparation for school exam. Though they had access to classrooms and teachers, they lacked a good teaching mechanism which would generate interest in their minds for learning about science, social sciences, mathematics and plethora of other subjects. I had realized quite soon in my volunteering pursuits that the problems faced by students in rural parts of Global South countries would be much more amplified than those faced by my students.
Being a techie, the solutions that formed in my mind were most based on emerging technologies. And having been a technology consultant for a major part of my career so far, I found virtual reality to be a promising tool for improving quality of education design and delivery.
The transformative power of virtual reality (VR) in education cannot be overstated. As someone who’s witnessed its impact firsthand, I firmly believe that VR can redefine education, especially for disadvantaged populations in Global South countries. Opening Doors to Unreachable Classrooms
One of the most significant challenges in Global South countries is the lack of access to quality education. Many children in remote villages and slums are unable to attend school due to a variety of reasons, such as distance, lack of resources, or safety concerns. VR changes the game by bringing the classroom to these children.
I vividly remember an initiative in a semi-urban part of India where VR headsets were introduced in a small school. Suddenly, students who had never left their town for a hospital were suddenly transported to the internal chambers of a virtual heart to understand its functionalities. The excitement in their eyes was palpable, and their enthusiasm for learning was contagious. VR made the unreachable reachable, opening doors to knowledge they couldn’t have fathomed before. Currently, researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Madras are developing AR/VR-based education model for rural schools.
Engaging, Immersive Learning
Traditional teaching methods often struggle to engage students, especially in underprivileged areas. VR offers an immersive experience that caters to various learning styles. Imagine a history lesson where students can “walk” through ancient civilizations, or a biology class where they can explore the human body in 3D. Learning becomes an adventure, not a chore.
I discussed this use case firsthand with my colleagues during one of the corporate hackathons. Children who had previously been disinterested in reading could suddenly find themselves captivated by virtual stories. VR made the learning process so enjoyable that they didn’t even realize they were studying. It was a revelation, and their literacy rates soared.
Empowering Educators and Overcoming Barriers
One might assume that implementing VR in education is a logistical nightmare, especially in resource-constrained regions. However, I’ve seen how technology can overcome these barriers. VR doesn’t replace teachers; it empowers them.
In a Kenyan school, teachers were trained to integrate VR into their lessons. This not only enhanced their teaching methods but also gave them access to a treasure trove of resources. VR excursions to historical sites, interactive science experiments, and immersive language lessons became part of the curriculum. It was heartening to see how quickly teachers adapted and, in turn, how students flourished.

In my journey through Global South countries, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of VR in education. It brings distant worlds closer, turns learning into an adventure, and empowers educators. By harnessing this technology, we can redefine education for disadvantaged populations, offering them opportunities that were once unimaginable.
