Shaping the internet
In our readings this week we’ve gone over ways in which the culture of the designers has influenced the design and goals of the internet and how we interact with the digital world. Most important to take away from this is to again notice that the development of this technology has not been inevitable and instead has been shaped by particular communities and attitudes which themselves are changed in relation to this tech. The clip below from a BBC documentary addresses this and talks about what will happen when more people from around the world are able to get online.
As countries like China and India as well as much of Africa continue to develop the infrastructure needed for their people to get online it will be interesting to see how these systems, which can often at least partly be seen as expressions of Western liberalism, will be shaped by and possibly shape its new users.
