It was the third week of our weekly Insurtech Forums, and I feel like my co-host Matthew Jones and I are hitting our stride. The topic: Hitting Refresh: Insurance Infrastructure.

We wanted to address the topic of core systems renewal and the likelihood for startups to impact the vast, expensive and often antiquated world of legacy insurance infrastructure. We were joined by three awesome guests, Rosina Smith from Insurdata (representing innovations in commercial property data), Antton Pena from Flock (representing real-time risk engines and full-stack insurance infrastructure) and Eric Mignot from +Simple (representing innovations in product/distribution through a digital advisor).

Unsurprisingly, all of the participants identified that, when it comes to core systems in insurance, there are massive efficiencies to be created by adopting new technologies, germane to cost-savings and customer-centricity. Most surprising moments included:

  • Eric Mignot shared his perspective on how legacy systems architecture reinforces poor product design.
  • Rosina Smith shared her view that sometimes legacy infrastructure is fit-for-purpose, and startups need to learn to augment/build alongside it.
  • Antton Pena revealed his belief that naming specific technologies is irrelevant to the discussion; it’s the tech implementation strategy that counts!

We’re taking this week off (three weeks is hard, people!) — but Anthemis’ weekly Insurtech Forums will be back on April 20, 2020, this time exploring “The Future of Mobility,” with Matthew Jones and mobility expert (and our newest colleague!), Kate Sampson. Click here to sign up!
