So AI can help play convincing AI characters. But can AI tools help writers write them?

AI writing apps, also known as natural language generation (NLG) software, are designed to automate the process of generating written content. They use advanced algorithms and natural language processing techniques to analyze data and generate written reports, articles, or other types of written content. Some AI writing apps can also be trained to write in a specific style or tone, making them well-suited for tasks like generating marketing copy or creating personalized emails. Additionally, some AI writing apps can help with tasks like grammar and spelling correction, making them useful tools for writers and content creators.

At some point or another, every writer experiences a creativity block. No matter how experienced or talented you are, there will be times when the words just don’t come as easily as they usually do. That’s where AI writing tools can help. There are a number of AI writing tools available that can help you overcome those blocks and get the words flowing again. Whether it’s finding the right word for a particular scene or coming up with ideas for new characters, these tools can help you scale your creative output and get the job done faster. Here are just a few of the ways AI writing tools can help:

Generative Pre-Writing:

One of the most common activities writers do to overcome a block is to generate ideas through pre-writing exercises. This can involve anything from brainstorming to freewriting to mind mapping. AI writing tools can help with this by providing prompts and templates to get you started. They can also offer suggestions for how to develop your ideas further.

Dialogue Writing:

Dialogue is one of the most important aspects of any script or story. It’s what brings your characters to life and moves the plot forward. But writing realistic, believable dialogue can be difficult, especially if you’re stuck in a rut. AI writing tools can help by suggesting different ways to write a particular line of dialogue or by providing example dialogue from similar scenes in other works.

Script Scaling:

If you’re working on a larger project, such as a TV show or movie, AI writing tools can be a valuable asset in helping you scale your output. They can provide templates for different types of scenes and suggest ways to make each one unique. They can also keep track of all the different characters and plot threads so you don’t lose track of what’s going on.

AI writing tools are a valuable asset for any writer, no matter what their experience level is. If you’re struggling with creativity blocks, these tools can help you get the words flowing again. And if you’re working on a larger project, they can help you scale your output and keep track of all the different elements. So if you’re looking for a way to improve your writing process, consider using AI writing tools.

Using an AI Writing tool to write about AI Writing

Did I fool you??? Yep, all of the text above was written by either ChatGPT or Jasper!

GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3) is a state-of-the-art language processing AI model developed by OpenAI. Its most common use so far is creating ChatGPT — a highly capable chatbot. GPT-3 gives a user the ability to give a trained AI a wide range of worded prompts. These can be questions, requests for a piece of writing on a topic of your choosing or a huge number of other worded requests. The opening paragraph of this blog post was in response to my prompt “what can AI Writing Apps do?”

According to its own marketing copy, Jasper “helps you and your team break through creative blocks to create amazing, original content 10X faster”. It positions itself as being able to help speedily create “amazing” blog posts, art + images, web content, marketing copy, sales emails, SEO content, Facebook ads, even love letters!

So, were these tools amazing? They were certainly fast; and apparently, the natural language processing algorithms know more about blog writing than I do. Since starting these blogs, I’ve been introduced to the Hemingway App to help me master the art of writing clearer, bolder blogs. According to our ‘Readability Scores’, it seems ChatGPT and Jasper are more naturally talented than me:

My writing (left) vs AI-generated text (right): I’ve clearly got some lessons to learn in the art of bold, clear blog writing!

ChatGPT and Jasper are just two of a handful of AI writing tools positioning themselves as a writer’s best friend. Others include CopyAI, Writefull, DeepStory and Sudowrite.

But how does a writer feel about using it? I’ve invited playwright Tristan Bernays to have a play with Sudowrite. Part 2 of this blog will explore how he got on…

This blog is part of a series I’m writing on what’s hot in both the software and experiential worlds. Follow me to get my latest discoveries straight to your inbox.
