It’s honestly hard to buy gifts for people.

You want the gift to be sentimental and something that they will enjoy, but when they have everything they could ever want, it’s even more difficult to shop for them.

Gift cards are always a good option, but when you and your best friend continuously and without fail trade $50 general gift cards year after year for birthdays, it might be time for something a little more personal.

This time of year it might be strange to see an article about gift giving, but for me, many of my friend’s birthdays are in the summer. Especially this year, gifts are important to boosting morale because coronavirus prevents any real celebration party.

Here is a short list of gift ideas for when you’ve thoroughly run out of ideas, but still want to show that person you are connected to them and want to celebrate them and your friendship during this time.

1. Themed Basket

Just like those services that send you a bunch of cool products related to the topic of your choice, a themed basket is a great option for a friend’s birthday gift.

The hodge-podge of items all centered around one theme that your friend loves is able to cover many bases so even if they don’t love everything in the basket, they will enjoy the personal touch the theme brings. Themed journals, stationary, candles, bath soaps, home decor, snacks — you name it, can all be included in a special themed gift basket for a friend!

By showing that you are engaged with their interests and looked for things that go along with the diversity that is their personality, you’re sure to gain major brownie points!

Themed baskets offers you the flexibility of giving practical gifts but also the freedom to make them personal! This is also a great way to incorporate in-jokes into a gift that is more meaningful than a basic gift card.

2. Gift Card to their Favorite Restaurant

Everyone loves food, and with coronavirus still lurking, maybe your friend isn’t comfortable eating out at a restaurant. With this gift, you can bring their favorite foods to them. Your friend can order delivery and enjoy that meal they have been craving for past several months.

If your friend doesn’t love a particular restaurant in the area, send them their favorite snack or adult beverage. There are various services that send fruit, chocolate and even wine to your doorstep. You could even make them the food item yourself!

Everyone is going to appreciate a meal or a snack that they enjoy so take advantage of these businesses to make sure your friend has a happy belly on their birthday!

3. Field Trip

Given COVID-19 this might not be the best gift option at the moment, but giving someone the gift of an experience they will remember is a great way to show someone you care.

If safe, take them to a place of interest, a museum, show, skydiving — if you’re into that — anything that will give them a fun experience.

If all else fails, you can create an experience for them at home by making a picnic, or by getting all dressed up and playing the best tunes. Create a movie night at home and DIY a fort with some blankets and sheets. Do a virtual cooking class or watch the newest comedy special online.

The best part about these gift ideas is that they can be adjusted for any age group or special occasion, you just have to be creative!

Focusing gifts around the friendship is crucial in providing a gift that is meaningful and special.

Now more than ever it is important to be socially engaged with our friends.

Times are tough, but bringing a smile to someone’s face is priceless!
