Not everyone wakes up in the morning, feeling motivated and ready to start working. Most of us procrastinate, some of us procrastinate for hours, others procrastinate for days or even weeks. Are you determined to stop the habit of procrastinating? Here are five tips to help you beat the biggest disruptor to work.

1) Identify the reason why you are procrastinating

Common reasons that cause procrastination are:

  • The project is too massive, and you don’t know where to start
  • You find your work too dull or difficult
  • There is too much work to do on a single day
  • You are waiting for the “right” time to start

Figuring out what makes you procrastinate can help you tackle the issue more effectively. It is the first step to trying to break off this bad habit.

2) Break down the work into small bite-sized tasks

Getting overwhelmed with the number of things that you have to complete? Break them down; just like eating a cookie one bite at a time.

Create a to-do list for the things you have to get done on a particular day. Ticking off to-do lists can be a really motivating and satisfying thing to do

3) Start a timer for 5 minutes before doing your work

Starting a task is always the hardest part, but give this a try. Grab your phone and set a timer for five minutes. Five minutes have passed, and you are probably too immersed in your work to stop. You are most likely to have the motivation to finish your work since you have started on it anyway; why not finish it and clear an item off the to-do list?

4) Create a workspace

Having a workspace is essential to being productive. It provides a distraction-free area for you to focus solely on your work.

Separate your workspace from the area that you usually rest; e.g. your bedroom. Your workspace should be somewhere free of distractions that will hinder your work progress. An excellent location for a workspace is a study room; with little to no distractions. Decorate your workspace with your favourite stationeries, flowers or candles; personalise it!

5) Have a clear idea on what you want to achieve

Think about your goals. Why do you want to attain them?

Whether it is getting top grades in school, or earning your first 10k, use your goals to motivate yourself to start working hard towards them. Reaching your ultimate goal may seem too far away, but a little progress adds up every day, and eventually, your goal will not be that far away from you. Don’t give up!

Conclusion

I hope that these tips will help you like how they have helped me beat procrastination. Procrastination is a problem that we all face at some point in life. Some of us overcame it while others are still struggling to combat it.

I believe that procrastination is a choice and that everyone can fight against it. All the best to you!
