Not a long time ago, my friend just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. I felt very happy for her that I thought hard for days what on earth should I choose as a newborn baby gift. I asked around some new mothers out there and found out some intersections of things they would love to have and what things they had too many of. This guide will save you some time of the day and grant you the gratification from the receiver of the gifts.

1. 6–12 months outfits for the baby

Never buy outfits with the newborn / 3 months size. The parents must have bought a lot of it before the baby is born. In the end, there will just be an excess of it. If you’d like to buy some outfits for the baby, buy it in the 6–12 months size. If you’re not sure of the gender, you may select pajamas/shirt that is gender-neutral.

2. Mothercare vouchers

If you like to be practical or you’re restricted at home due to the COVID-19, this is the perfect gift to get. Among the mothers I asked, all of those have at least bought one item from Mothercare. Moreover, with the huge selection of items there, the voucher you give would 100% be put in use. This blog is not sponsored by Mothercare in any way and this truly comes from my observations after asking some mothers.

3. Pampers

All the mothers I talk to also say that they would not reject pampers as a gift. Though it may seem like a weird idea, there are a few reasons why Pampers is a good gift to give. First, there are only a few brands of Pampers and most of them did not cause allergic reactions to the baby. It is also easy to figure out the brand that the baby is using. Secondly, newborn babies run out of Pampers very quickly that there is no such thing as too many pampers. Thirdly, Pampers is also a better alternative compared to toys, which is not as necessary as Pampers. Most moms have also mentioned how they received tons of duplicated trendy toys, with one of them quoted saying, “I have 3 bunny dolls of the same size and color from 3 different people”.

4. Gold Bar

Nowadays, gold bars are starting from 1 gram and above selling at around S$60 dollars subject to the real-time price. You can easily customize the weight based on your budgets. They also offer personalization services/engraving on top of the gold bar and beautiful gift boxes. This is also a gift that could act as an investment piece, which is quite fluid that the parents can sell it anytime and crisis resistant, as seen during this COVID-19 situation.

5. Pajamas for the mom

Taking care of a newborn is a hard and time-consuming task. Losing sleep is almost always guaranteed during the first month. It is even harder for the mom to look presentable all day with full make-up on especially when guests are coming in to visit the baby. Therefore, a good looking silk /satin pajamas could make a difference. There are even pajamas whose design makes it look like a going-out outfit. This can be worn on quick errands to the grocery/gas station. It doesn’t have to look sexy but this will make the mom looking less tired. Trust me, the mom would be happy and grateful for this gift! After all, sometimes we forget that giving birth is not only about the baby, it is also a celebration for the mom and it is also right to present a gift for the mom.

In general, when looking for baby gifts, look for usefulness, ease of use, and sometimes style. A good gift is one that new parents will find themselves reaching for over and over again. While it’s fun to look at cute little things at baby showers, it’s those lifesavers in the middle of the night or mid-meltdown for which parents will be truly thankful. It also has to be easy to use, the last thing new parents want is baby gifts that are difficult and cumbersome to use. Lastly, if the gifts are useful and easy to use, it never hurts to choose the ones with a bit of style and cuteness.
