Money and Writing

In the dream writing world, there are two scenarios that dominate the imagination: 1. We hit it big as the next Stephen King, JK Rowling, or James Patterson; or 2. We live as struggling artists like Jack Kerouac or Fyodor Dostoevsky in his day. We know very little of the ones in the middle.

However, when I read (or rather, listened to) Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, I came to an understanding about the role of my writing and its association with money-making.

Although I am not so well-off that I do not require an income, I am not struggling so much that I have to make an income. I know it is a luxurious place to find myself, but it is one of both my making and the blessings that the Universe has poured upon me. So, in this moment in time, I contemplate the ways in which I can harness my need to write with my desire to make money from it.

While there are many articles/posts out there with titles like this one, I am often reluctant to read them as I am not and do not want to become obsessed with how to monetize my life source. It would be like trying to bottle up the air and selling it as a unique product when it’s just air and something that everyone needs. Although not everyone must write nor read my writing, I struggle to place an earthly value on what I do as naturally as I breathe.

Also, I do not imagine myself to have the kind of talent or presence that those in the first scenario can claim ensuring a steady income stream, for I am but a writer who writes for the love of writing, not the love of money. So, it is a dilemma — Do I make money doing something else to support my writing habit, as suggested by Elizabeth Gilbert? Or, do I find a way to monetize what I do write?

I don’t actually have an answer, and no doubt that a search here or there will provide one with a lot of suggestions/advice.

Instead, I am planning on writing. I have a novel about half done. I am starting a new nonfiction handbook mixed with anecdotes. I will keep writing here and there. Then, who knows, maybe one day I’ll get a few coins to cover the many cups of coffee I’ve consumed so I can write. 😝
