Who Says Cupid Can’t Be A Woman?

Women Shooting Shots

It can be difficult to embrace the possibility of feeling humiliated if your feelings are unrequited, but it is unacceptable that you’re baulking just because you are a woman.

The Urban Dictionary describes the phrase “shoot your shot” as letting go of your pride to pursue someone you are interested in. From the streets to school to parties and even your workplace, men are out there putting themselves in a position of possible rejection and sometimes complete embarrassment because they are willing to risk it for the possibility of having that special someone with them. The question is why aren’t more women doing this? Who says a woman cannot shoot her shot?

Society has women programmed to never take the first step in establishing relationships.

We have heard countless times that men like to do the chasing. While this may be true, it certainly isn't fact. I have been told by a male acquaintance that the reason my relationship with a guy flopped was because I initiated it. Men like my acquaintance are one of the problems but the real culprit here is society. We have been programmed to see women who initiate relationships as being too forward, loose or just plain desperate. How do I call bullshit without swearing? Anyways, it's complete hogwash. Men can sometimes be the slowest beings in the entire universe and if you wait for them, they might never make a move.

Your crush might crush you with the blow of their rejection.

Even when the odds that your feelings might be reciprocated are extremely high, the idea of shooting your shot remains daunting. There is still a chance that your crush might crush you with the blow of their rejection. Will it hurt more? Probably. Should it deter you from shooting your shot? NO. Absolutely not! The fear of rejection has not stopped you from applying for jobs and it shouldn't stop you from asking that man out.

Whenever fear comes knocking, remember the time you spaced out in the middle of the day because you could smell his cologne or that awkward day you called your boss by your crush’s name because that was all you could think about. You could avoid spending next valentines day alone (and typing God when in numerous comment sections) if there is a possibility that he feels the same way.

In life, you miss 100% of the shots you do not take

I struggled to write this because I was trying to be politically correct. I told myself countless times that encouraging women to tell their crushes that they like them is simply not up to me. Also, what will people think? Even writing about it made me take a pause, I got scared and let fear hold me back for a bit but guess what, if you don’t shake it off, like I eventually did, it could stop you from crossing that threshold from friends to more than friends.

Now, I am not saying you should tell that married man, your sister’s boyfriend or your cousin’s fiance, that you like him. Abeg o! If he is not committed to any woman in any way, then I encourage you to take inspiration from the OG shot shooter; Ruth, who snagged her Boaz in Biblical times by shooting her shot. You can be creative, simple, straightforward, dramatic but most importantly don’t be afraid to shoot your shot girl. Go for it!
