Telecommuting was a much spoken of modus operandi some years ago. There were many discussions on how it will revolutionize the work place. The growth in anytime anywhere connectivity and communication software that aid both synchronous and asynchronous communication has now paved the way for the Virtual Office. We have Sri Lankans working for companies based overseas without really being in the shores of the particular country, but being fully connected to their systems and networks.

Telecommuting brings about a revolution in parenting even in this corner of the world. Parents in this region find it quite unorthodox to have their children at home the whole day without stepping into an office space. What they don’t understand is the impact this kind of paradigm shift has on life and what a blessing it is to be able to avoid the daily commute to work.

Meet Haneez Haroon. A Software Engineering graduate from Staffordshire University. A day in the life of Haneez is a perfect example of how much we can benefit from this type of work arrangement.

Haneez is a full stack web developer and has experience working with many offshore companies. His work with OnePulse, a market research startup based in London has been an enriching experience. He is also an entrepreneur who co-founded Motor Automotive, Catalyst Interactive , and the tutorial Blog Tutebox. He used to take on a few freelance contracts from Fiverr while managing his entrepreneurial ventures. So why change over to a full time job? His daugther, Haya. She was born in 2015, and that made Haneez focus on spending time with her while working full time.

Haya is an amazingly lucky kid. Her dad spends as much time as he can with her. Haneez and his wife Rizniya both spend time with Haya in the morning until he drops Rizniya who is currently Assistant Manager — Treasury Middle Office, Amana Bank, off at work. From then on till 1.00 pm Haya is daddy’s girl. From the updates we see from Haneez, both dad and daughter enjoy this time quite a bit. He’s grooming her to be an independent and technology savvy girl, who will one day be able to conquer the world. From 1.00 pm Haya spends time with her grandparents while Haneez starts work. Again, as he works from home, he is at hand for any emergency. His wife gets home around 6 and Haya is back with her parents. Haneez completes his work and gets back to family time.

In this day and age where children spend a lot of time away from the parents because of their work commitment, Haneez stands out. Not only do he and his wife have a lovely working arrangement where both of them share the responsibility of bringing up their precious daughter, they also ensure that their daughter sees how much a man does to balance the workload in the house. This is an important aspect in the Asian region, where it is almost unheard of to see this much support from a male.

While managing such a busy schedule, Haneez still contributes towards the IT industry in this country. He’s a proficient Mobile App developer and has been developing a wide range of apps for Etisalat, a company he developed apps for while a student at APIIT. TechNews, Biz News, CineUp, Fun Facts, Prayer time, Exchange rate converter are a few of these apps, possibly used by us without knowing who the maker was.

He’s been a promoter of Women in IT and has been a guest speaker at many an event, encouraging them to bring their skills to the industry.

“Many women don’t pursue their careers after marriage. It is a pity as IT is such a flexible field when it comes to work arrangements. I’ve done a couple of talks for the TRC of Sri Lanka, to motivate females to work from home and bring their skills to our industry”

Who better than Haneez to deliver these inspirational speeches, as he is one who walks the talk every day.

We are proud to have you as our alumnus Haneez. You have mastered the art of time management and work life balance, while continuing to update your skills over the years.

We hope your story inspires many to bring about a change in the way they approach life.
